Model - Highway Patrolman (this is an early model that pre-dates the Model 28);

Grips - Herrett target grips have been re-finished with a light brown stain.

Details - Comes with a leather basket-weave style holster made by the Earl Ginn Company of Belmont, CA, and a double dump-pouch made by Thompson Inc of Northridge, CA. Early production revolver with "S" prefix in serial number -- S115xxx. Five-screw frame. Most likely made in 1954, the first year of production. Condition of the metal is original/non-restored, and it shows honest holster wear and a few handling marks. Mechanically excellent. Trigger shoe installed by a previous owner. Reported to have been used as a duty gun by an Idaho police officer. Used, no box or paperwork. More photos available on request.

"In the late 1940's and early 1950's, Smith & Wesson was the only American firearms company making a .357 Magnum revolver in their Model 27, descended from their famous Registered Magnum. Law enforcement agencies favored the Model 27, but its high-polish finish and labor-intensive top-strap checkering added expense with no added utility. Since the 'deluxe' model was the only revolver available for this cartridge at the time, police departments as well as individual officers and private shooters requested from S & W a more utilitarian, "budget" .357 Magnum. In 1954 Smith & Wesson responded with the Highway Patrolman (re-named the Model 28 in 1957). In developing the Highway Patrolman, Smith & Wesson removed the more expensive features from the Model 27 in order to reduce production costs without reducing utility. The manufacturing changes made a more affordable revolver, though mechanically the Highway Patrolman is the same as the more ornate Model 27. A classic N-frame revolver, the Highway Patrolman is blued but not polished and the top-strap and rounded areas of the frame are bead-blasted to achieve a matte finish. The Highway Patrolman/Model 28 was made from 1954 through 1986, and for most of its production run it was a steady seller with both police officers and sport shooters." (Adapted from Wikipedia.org)
