Description: This Colt New Service revolver was produced in 1919. It is stamped on the butt "U.S.ARMY" above "MODEL 1917" with the butt number stamped "No 49443" below the lanyard ring. The bore of the 5.5 inch barrel is in outstanding condition. The front sight blade is the usual thin sharkfin profile. The top of the barrel, near the front sight, has the often seen different coloration caused by the sight blade being attached after the barrel was finished. On the bottom of the barrel is marked; "UNITED STATES PROPERTY" beneath the extractor rod. The extractor rod has the correct knurled cylinder head with a single indented grove at the mid-point of the extractor rod head. The cylinder shows a faint cylinder line and is chambered for the .45 ACP cartrige. The rear sight is on the frame topstrap, the usual pinched groove. The smooth, slighty rounded trigger is blued and the cylinder latch is the simpler WWI flat style. The (civilian?) hammer was polished bright on the sides with both the hammer and cylinder latch being knurled where the thumb would contact the part. The hammer does show some discoloration on both polished sides with a dull-blue finish on the top and rear of the hammer. The dull-blue finish of the revolver shows some usage with 94% finish remaiming. The majority of the blue loss is on the top of the barrel. The Original smooth walnut grip shows some usage mars. All in all this Model revolver served the U.S. military well for 36 years and is in far better than average condition for one that, until this year, was "just an old army gun". These New service revolvers were made from 1897 until 1944. They were the largest of the Colt double action revolvers until the Anaconda. The military used the Model 1909 in the Phillipines, Mexico, WWI, WWII and beyond. The 1917 was used in WWI,the Banana Wars,WWII,Korea and Vietnam. Many of the approximatlly 150,000 of these revolvers were altered in a myrid of ways. These revolvers, in original condition, are fast disappearing, so don't miss this oppurtunity to own one. It would be at home in either a military or Colt collection.
