Here is a very attractive economy version of Mossberg’s tried and true 500 series shotgun, the Maverick 88. Manufacturer and warrantor is Mossberg’s Texas branch, Maverick Arms of Eagle Pass. Model is 88, Security / Special Purpose series. Type is Extended Capacity pump or slide action shotgun. Construction is steel barrel, magazine tube, double slide bars, bolt, trigger and internal parts all built into an alloy receiver that undercuts the Remington 870 on weight, with traditional black buttstock and corncob police style serrated synthetic forend. Finish is blued steel with semi gloss black anodized receiver. Trigger group housing is high impact black polymer, with .292 smooth faced combat trigger. Safety is right side forward trigger guard, for right handed shooters. Barrel is 3 inch chambered 20 inch matte blue steel plain bead sight, with .730 vicinity Cylinder Bore muzzle. Magazine capacity is 7 rounds of 2 3/4 inch shells, or 6 rounds of 3 inch shells, 7+1 capacity on 2 3/4 inch shells. Weight empty is 6 1/2 pounds, with center of gravity at the breech face. Buttstock measures 13 7/8 inches from the trigger face to the end of the 7/8 inch black rubber factory recoil pad. Stock drop is standard 1.5 x 2.5, with a 3/4 inch right hand cant. We have added a trench type black polymer heat shield for the barrel. These shotguns came to us from Mossberg’s distribution system. They likely served as a showgirl with Mossberg’s reps and writers. We call them factory demos. Each one bears a U letter mark near its serial number. Surface detractions are minimal, really no more operation streaking and faint edge whitening than what one sees on many new display guns in stores. We rate these guns as Excellent, 90 to 95 percent vicinity by our estimate. Photos, at any rate, ought to suffice for our distinguished shoppers to judge finish grade for themselves. Bore, chamber, and mechanism are all bright and clean. If any of these were fired, it was fewer than 50 times. Each 88 Special Purpose descendant of the Mossberg 500 comes in a relabeled Mossberg Factory Box with factory lock, and instruction manual that contains Mossberg’s warranty statement, one year for a model 88. Similar shotguns from competitor Remington sell for upwards of $500 apiece.
