Scabbard is a mark 2 with two rivets securing retaining spring. Brass locket and chap with small drain hole. End edge of socket marked crown/BR/7 Blade marked 58 (stroked out) a rack number. Marked "R" and broad arrow/WD for war dept. Inspection mark crown/E/62. Also crown/B/24, crown//1/E and two dates, /90 and 4/89. Last is a refurbish mark of Birmingham, crown/BR/40, this mark is stamped and feels raised, not polished flush, added after the blade was polished. Note the first 4" of the blade being a perpendicular ground rougher finish. The scabbard locket inspection mark is arrow/WD crown/E/27. On the leather near the locket is marked 2/83 for year made and crown/E/77, another inspection mark. This bayonet is an "attic find" and therefore has not been cleaned and shows original finishing marks. This pattern bayonet was widely used during the Zulu Wars. The Pattern 1876 was approved on the 7th of June 1876 and during its service life, 532,759 were made by Enfield, this total includes 13,800 for Colonial contracts. BSA Co also made 28,200 bayonets though 10,647 of these were rejected for service. According to British & Commonwealth Bayonets by Richardson & Skennerton, the bayonet Will has, has a Mk2 Scabbard with two strengthening rivets. The Mk2 scabbard was approved in the LOCs on the 26th o February 1879 and the 19th of April 1879. Sheath has only metal parts original, leather probably roten out and was replaced by makeshift one.
