Parker Brothers built fine side-by-sides in Meriden, CT, 70 from 1866 to 1934. Totaling almost 250,000 units, Parker guns were uncompromising in their quality and the choice of prominent Americans including presidents, authors, shooters, and actors as well as thousands of “folks”. VH was the best selling grade with about 79,000 built. Fancier than the budget models, the VH was popular because it gave American shooters a modestly upscale shotgun at a fair price. Parker SxS's hark back to an era of elegance in upland hunting. Simple to use, nimble, and rugged, these classy doubles were ideal for that purpose.

This 20 ga is a example of one of Parkers later SxS doubles. Graded “VH” and “V” on the water table near the s/n (219xxx – matching the barrels and fore end) the deluxe VH was the most popular of the Parker line, featuring richly blued barrels, case-hardened & lightly engraved receiver, and select wood. A smoothly pivoting release lever breaks the action at the shotgun's balance point behind the fore end. Dual extractors lift shells from the chambers for manual removal. The slim 28-inch "VULCAN STEEL" barrels are joined by a 3/8" patterned rib with muzzle and mid-rib white beads for aiming. Muzzles are choked approximately IC (L .602” - .R 608” ). Modest border engraving adorns the receiver surfaces and screw holes. This model features a pistol-grip and splinter fore end. The butt is capped with a Hawkins, ventilated hard rubber recoil pad. The wood is gloss-finished, medium-dark, relatively straight grained walnut. Both the wrist and fore end bear well executed checkering. A Galco leather cuff protects the butt, and the gun ships in a green, padded Orvis soft case.

Originally manufactured in 1925 (s/n 219xxx), this shotgun is rated NRA (antique) Very Good to Fine with overall finish at 60-70%. The gun seems in good working order. Both triggers function properly, and the extractor works as expected. The action is smooth with solid lock up, and the gun breaks down easily. Original barrel blue is about 90%, still even and rich but with a few wisps of plum patina just visible under strong, focused light. The barrels show a few light handling dings, mostly on the outer contours, and light contact scuffing on the underside beneath the fore end. The sharp edges of the muzzle, chamber mouths, and top rib are shiny. Receiver original finish is rated at 50%. Case colors have faded considerably but are still visible. Although faded, they are best preserved inside the fore end and on the upper tang under the thumb latch which still displays a nearly full color spectrum. Reds, greens, and yellows have faded to very subdued blues, browns, and ambers on the receiver sides. Only vestiges of the case colors remain as faint brown and blue mottling on the gunmetal-gray receiver underside. The receiver sides have 4 light scratches, 3 on the left and 1 on the right. Letters and engraving are still close to 100% – sharp and clear. Screw heads are not perfectly timed, with slots showing slight wear from past. The bores are mirror-bright, and unpitted although lightly streaked along the bore axes near the muzzle, probably with old fouling. Wood finish is just about 95% with the intact gloss coat interrupted by numerous light honest-handling dents, dings, scrapes, and grooves evenly distributed over the piece, most obviously on the right behind the receiver. Other major wood condition points are several small patches of crushed checkering on the left wrist and two dents at the edge of the checkering field on the right wrist. The Orvis soft case is clean and in Excellent condition as is the Galco butt cuff.
