This musket is typical of thousands produced in Birmingham during the 18th and 19th centuries for export throughout the British Empire. The Royal African Company, established in the late 17th century, supplied muskets in payment for slaves. Later, the African Company of Merchants continued this trade and by 1775 the price for a slave had risen to at least two muskets. Manufacture of trade muskets continued long after the Abolition of Slavery in 1833, and some were still being produced well into the 20th century. This musket (61” total length) is a copy of a late "Brown Bess" military musket of the 1820s. This example is marked with typical British proofmarks on top of the 45” barrel. The barrel, chambered in .55 caliber is good with age wear, light oxidation wear. Original ramrod included. The flintlock plate is marked “Warranted” near the rear and with an engraved Elephant with Tower (Mark used by the African Company of Merchants). The flintlock mechanism itself functions flawlessly as does the original trigger. The gun has brass trigger guard, ramrod guides, buttplate and sideplate.
