Savage A17 .17 HMR with Thumb Hole Stock, Threaded Barrel, Scope Mounts Guns > Rifles > Savage Rifles > Rimfire
Description: This is a Savage A17 semi-automatic rifle in .17 HMR caliber. It has a 22” fluted barrel and a laminated thumb hole stock. It has scope mounts and is threaded at the muzzle for either a suppressor or a flash attachment. It has probably had at least 2000 rounds through it and the bore is good. It shoots well. It comes with three factory magazines, 10 cartridges each.

That’s the good news. Here’s the bad. Savage didn’t try very hard to fix several simple things they could have done to make it really a good rifle. The laminated stock has a very thin portion between the trigger guard and the magazine well. It cracked, then broke out in the first weeks I had it. I am the second owner. So, I epoxied in a thicker piece of wood and shaped it to fit. Problem solved.

IMPORTANT!!! PLEASE READ CAREFULLY: The safety is a front trigger guard push button, side to side type. It simply blocks the trigger in the “safe” position. It has a small coil spring which is supposed to act as a detent. That spring is fitted loosely and is seated in a groove IN THE WOOD! With repetitive use, it started to malfunction. The spring wobbles because the wood is far less than precisely made to keep the spring in a constant place. After taking the gun apart and re-positioning the spring half a dozen times, I got pissed and pulled the safety cylinder straight out of the gun, tossing the spring away. The safety cylinder is with the gun but there is no spring. (A new owner will have to replace the safety, figure out a new one, or live without it as I have. The rifle does have a center trigger safety and it is a relatively good trigger.)

Finally, there were continual problems with function. Typically, it would fire the first of ten rounds then fail to chamber a second. The last eight went pretty smoothly. (And, yes, I was careful to seat the magazine so it locked in place, though this is also a problem.) The ammunition used was the recommended CCI A17 ammo. I don’t blame the failures on the ammo, but something in the mags or action. Also, I would get some numbers of misfires in every box. I have read that the average is two out of a hundred. Sounds about right. Replacing the cartridges, rotating the position so the firing pin would hit a different part of the rim, rarely solved the misfires.

So, Buyer, be aware that the gun has problems which I ran out of patience working on.
