Description: Offered in this auction is a real classic piece of history. Offered for sale is an Antique 45Cal Schofield First Model Single Action Revolver, complete with vintage period holster. 3035 of this First Model Schofield were manufactured by Smith and Wesson, for the US Army. This gun is serial number 2597 as marked on the butt, along with the "US" marking. My Smith and Wesson References say these 3035 First Model Schofields were finished mostly in blue. A nickle finish, as this one displays, is extremely rare. This is a standard military model with inspector's markings on various parts.

The revolver was named for Col. George Schofield who was instrumental in getting S&W to manufacture it, and the US Army to buy them. It's outstanding feature was that, because of it's top break action, it was much faster unloading and loading than the Colt SAA. A soldier on horseback could thumb back the top latch, flip the barrel opeh with his forearm and the ejector would discharge all 6 empty cartrigdes in one motion.

The US Ordnance Dept ordered almost the entire production of this model. Distinctive features were in the barrel catch( attached to the frame, rather than the top strap), gradefully shaped frame, and shorter ejector housing on the barrel. A round recoil plate was inserted in the frame, through which the hammer struck the cartridges. Many were issued to the US 4th Cavalary, seeing service in the Geronimo Campaign and the black troopers on the 9th and 10th US Cavalary, the intrepid "Buffalo Soldiers of the Indian Wars. The James Brothers, Jesse and Frank, Cole Younger brothers,James Gang and Quantrill Raiders all achieved notoriety while employing the Schofield. US Marshal Bill Tilghman also carried a Schofield. "Lonesome Charley" Reynolds, Chief Scout for Custer also carried the Schofield.

This particular Schofield has a broken grip on the left side. This gun was acquired from an estate and the shop owner considered replacing the grip but decided to leave it as it is as it is believed to be an original Schofield, with no modifications. We believe condition to be between Very Good and Fine as the gun has better than 70% of it's nickle finish, and is believed to be in complete working order, the broken grip being the only damage or missing part. I have supplied a number of photos showing all parts of the gun, in detail, so that prospective buyers can judge condition for themselves.

The gun was acquired with this holster which it seems to fit like a glove. Despite some research the maker of the holster is unknown. It is not military issue, but one that a later user, (after it's army service ended)acquired for it. The holster is in very good condition also, with no cracks or damage other than one fastener that appears to be missing. Leather is still soft and pliable. If someone should recognize the holster, and want to forward that information, I can add it to the listing.

This gun is for sale as-is. What you see is what you are bidding on and no warrantees are given or implied. All sales are final. Gun is believed to be in working condition but should be checked by a competent gunsmith before attempting to shoot it, for your own safety.
