A matched, sequentially serial numbered (W190 & W191) pair of Winchester Model 1885 Single Shot, High Wall, Special Sporting Rifles built to order for the Buffalo Bill Historical Center of Cody, Wy. This spectacular pair of M1885s was manufactured in 2001 to special order by the Ballard Rifle & Cartridge Company, assembled by the noted custom single shot target rifle maker & Master Gunsmith, Ron Long, and engraved by Winchester’s Master Engraver "Joseph". Documentation includes Letter of Authenticity, a specification detail sheet, email correspondence between L & M Enterprises & Master Engraver, Joseph. These 2 heirloom rifles share many of the same features & characteristics & incorporate distinctive embellishments specific to the individual rifle. Shared features & characteristics include: built to the original Winchester M1885 specifications; thick wall receivers; hand shaped, formed & finished “extra fancy black walnut” stocks; classic beaded cheekpieces, Schnabel foreends, ebony inlayed wedges in the foreend tips & pistol grips, hand cut checkering on the forearms & pistol grips; 32 inch, full octagonal tapered barrels; blade front sights & buckhorn rear sights; curved, checkered, inletted steel buttplates; single set triggers; extensive engraving by Joseph with a beautiful floral & scroll engraving pattern with scalloped borders; artfully executed gold wire inlays as ribbons & vines of gold at the muzzle & at the breech ends of the barrels. Serial number “W190” is chambered in .45-70 at 2 1/10. The barrel is a #4. SN "W190" is engraved on the bottom of the action. The lower receiver tang carries the engraver’s signature: "Joseph/Cody,Wy". Serial Number “W191” is chambered in .38-55. The barrel is a #3. SN "W191" is engraved on the bottom of the action.
