Description: In 1942, the Ordinance District requested of General Motors, Saginaw Steering Gear Division, take over the M1 carbine production assigned to Irwin-Pedersen in Grand Rapids. To separate the production of each plant, the prime symbol (‘) was marked after the S'G' on the receivers of the Grand Rapids carbines. Because the Grand Rapids plant was having to ramp up production quickly and had yet to manufacture all necessary parts for production, purchases of parts were made from other subcontractors including Underwood, Rock-Ola, Inland and others. The serial numbers for the Saginaw plant included the block 3,250,020 to 3,651,519, which normally would place this Carbine [3,636,xxx] in late Saginaw production. However, the Grand Rapids plant has been shown, by the S'G' marking to have used some of the Saginaw, Michigan serial numbers. Which seems to be the case with this rather rare Carbine. If you consider that there was a total Saginaw Steering Gear M1 Carbine production, during WWII, of only 517,212 weapons, which accounts for just 8.5% of total carbine production, and Grand Rapids production even smaller, with only about 223,620 manufactured during the war, then, any Carbine from the Grand Rapids plant is a very scarce version.

This Saginaw M1 Carbine is serial number 3,646,xxx, placing it in the rare enough late Saginaw, Michigan serial number block. However, the number stamping is crisp and the serial numbers have the offset numerals that are characteristic of Saginaw Grand Rapids receivers but Grand Rapids used this number in the Saginaw, Michigan range. Additionally, there appears to be a ‘ prime symbol over the S in the SG stamp on the left side of the receiver- see photo- indicating Grand Rapids plant. The Grand Rapids type barrel is 1943 Underwood, original to the production date of the rifle [Sept.-Oct. 43] very bright with strong lands, the trigger housing Underwood, again, all consistent with Grand Rapids production. The left butt of the stock shows the RIA [Rock Island Arsenal] over EB [Elmer Bjerke], showing post WWII overhaul. The mag is original GI Quality Hardware "UQ" marked. There is a very weak cartouche in a square on the Right butt [R?O] If interested ask for more photos. PAYMENT OPTIONS: I accept USPS Money Orders and personal/business checks.
