Thirty years ago, Savage introduced its plain Jane series of model 110 rifles, and they impressed all of us with their accuracy. Here is Savage’s recently introduced Axis series rifle. The Axis rifles, writes the factory, are affordable without sacrificing performance. The Axis XP rifle features a modern design with silky-smooth bolt operation and a detachable box magazine. This model is also drilled and tapped for scope mounts, and it comes with a 16 slot anodized alloy Picatinny rail that will accept any Weaver type rings or mounting system. Its black synthetic stock and 22 inch matte black carbon steel barrel allow for multipurpose shooting in multiple locales. Manufacturer is Savage Arms of Westfield, MA, and so marked. Type is bolt action high powered rifle. Construction is entirely steel metal, with graphite based polymer one piece contoured stock. Finish is matte blue with white bolt body. Barrel is 22 inch Carbon steel, standard weight, 1:10 right hand 6 groove rifling, with Savage’s distinctive and accuracy producing external collar. The barrel is completely free floating. Trigger is .250 smooth faced steel. This one is set on 3 1/2 pounds, with minimal felt creep and overtravel. Chambering is .308 Winchester caliber, and the Axis has a removable 4 shot magazine, 4 + 1 capacity. Safety is traditional Savage tang type. Buttstock length of pull is 13 1/2 inches from the trigger face to the end of the ported 1 inch rubber recoil pad. Overall length is 42 1/2 inches; and weight empty with scope is 7 pounds 2 ounces with center of gravity at the breech face. This rifle comes to us from its exclusive Ohio owner. From its J044000 range serial number, it was manufactured in 2011 or 2012. Surface detractions are minimal to negligible, as its photos show. We rate it as Excellent, 95 to 98 percent vicinity by our estimate, but photos ought to suffice for our distinguished shoppers to judge finish grade for themselves. Bore, chamber, and mechanism are all bright and clean. We estimate that this rifle has been fired fewer than 40 times. Replacement pricing on this rifle in our area is upwards of $400.
