Description:
This is a well-used, good mechanically, Single Action Army revolver, with 4.75" barrel in .45 Colt caliber. The gun has been buffed, at minimum, and possibly re-blued sometime back. There is no deep pitting and only hints of the rust patina on the frame. The serial numbers appear to have been over-stamped or added to the butt and trigger guard. There is also a Verified Proof mark on the left, front trigger guard bow and a number "1" on the same side rear. Since Colt didn't start using the VP until about 1902, I suspect that these parts have been replaced. Whether by the factory or outside, can’t be ascertained. The front sight has been filed down a bit. The gun cycles properly, has all four clicks and locks up tight. The bore is very nice, bright, with well-defined lands and grooves. The grips are not factory, but vintage, rosewood two-piece, and have been well fit. This Colt is an antique, and needs no FFL to ship.
Colt Archives notes this gun as being one of six shipped to Shoverling, Daly & Gales, New York City, April 16, 1889. It adds a note that another, with the same serial number, was shipped to Hibbard, Spencer and Bartlett, Chicago, Illinois, on May 23, 1889, with nine other guns. There is no explanation for this duplication.
The holster accompanying the Colt is an early, laced, heavy leather, single loop, 4.75”, made by H. H. Heiser, Denver, Colorado, in good condition.
