Smith & Wesson debuted the Model 27 in 1935 as the " .357 Registered Magnum". Built on S&W's beefy "N frame" (the same platform they would later use for the "Dirty Harry" .44 Magnum), this model was S&W's first .357 Mag revolver. Available only from the custom shop for the first years of production, the gun was so popular that it was added to the standard catalog in 1939 as the ".357 Magum", and ultimately dubbed the Model 27 / 627 when S&W went to model numbers. Noted for its durability, reliability, and accuracy, this big revolver developed a distinguished following in the mid century. GEN George Patton carried an ivory-handled specimen in WWII, and it was the revolver of choice of many FBI agents through the 1960's. The current variant is the stainless 627 with a potent 8-round capacity. Originally designed to fit the needs of police departments and state highway patrols in the pre automatic era, these revolvers were carefully crafted for combat balance, consistent feel, ruggedness, and accuracy. This gun (s/n CZJ2xxx) is built on Smith & Wesson's large "N" round butt frame with a 5 inch barrel and S&W target sights, which consist of a fixed front heavy undercut blade with a gold bead insert and a rear notch, fully click adjustable for elevation and windage. Finish consists of S&W's pemium matte-silver stainless with chrome trigger and tear-drop hammer. The hammer is a .312” smooth target unit with integral overtravel stop. The gun has a full length top rib with deep, beautifully machined grooves along its entire length to eliminate glare along the sight plane. The well-figured, dark-wood stocks are hand filling and satin-finished with finger grooves, S&W logos, and a soft sandpaper-style stippling pattern. The 2nd (“working”) set of grips put in the box by S&W are black synthetic Hogue Monogrips with well defined stippling and S&W logos. S&W also provides 2 8-round moon clips to simplify loading if desired. This gun feels great in the hand, has S&W's classic smooth trigger, and has the ergonomics typical of great S&W revolvers.
