S&W Model 39-2: in blued steel (slide) and wood Guns > Pistols > Smith & Wesson Pistols - Autos > Alloy Frame
Description: Up for auction is a beautiful example of the S&W Model 39-2 with a blued steel slide over an alloy frame. This pistols are as hard to find as they are desirable: these are the original slim, single-stack 9mm's that are so popular today--and not plastic, but in real steel. This holds 7 rounds in the magazine and 1 in the chamber, for a total of 8 rounds altogether. It will shoot all the 9mm loads: plus P, plus P plus, hollow points, FMJ, and all defensive loads. These pistols were designed after the end of WW 2 at the request of the U.S. military to possibly replace the 1911 .45 ACP (something which the Beretta 92 ultimately did). Impressed with German P-38, the U.S. military entertained the idea for a short while of a slim, compact auto chambered in the easier-to-shoot 9mm. As it worked out, the army never extended the contract to S&W, but the domestic police departments picked it up in the late 50's, and from that point on, the pistol's acceptance was firmly established in the marketplace. Street gangs, revolutionaries, and drug crazed junkies later on forced the police departments to up-gun to try to keep pace with the criminals, and the police for the most part all went to high-capacity 9's and 40's. This example is the second iteration of the Model 39, and comes with some adaptations and improvements, for example, the lanyard loop on the handle. The Model 39 breaks down just like the 1911: slide stop pin, barrel bushing, and recoil spring over rod. These are delightful guns to shoot: fast DA/SA, accurate, reliable, adjustable rear sights, ramped front (pinned), safety-decocker, compact 4" barrel, crisp trigger with a quick reset, non-glare top strap, beautiful checkered wood grips, and S&W bullet proof quality! These pistols are almost too nice to shoot. In fact, many owners are simply putting them away as collector items. But they are still terrific carry guns: either as service guns or concealed. Not many left, and harder and harder to find, especially in this nice of a condition. The pictures tell the story.
