The Model 42 is an icon in the ranks of Winchester firearms, made in the days of the highest quality control and hand fitted parts. The Model 42 was a flawlessly produced little pump gun, chambered only for the diminutive .410 shotgun shell. The Winchester Model 42 has been held dear in the eyes of the .410 aficionado, and there has been a strong following for the upgraded guns that have been highly decorated with fine floral scroll, gold inlays, fancy wood, etc. Gino Gargnel was a well known Browning Superposed master engraver having worked at the FN plant in Belgium from 1951 to 1977, after which he moved to the USA. Master Engraver Gino Cargnel is a sought-after engraving artist that has been responsible for many of these fine upgrades, and as he winds down his life’s work spanning decades, the attention to his accomplishments is multiplying rapidly. This beautiful Model 42, sn28990 original built in 1937, is a grand example of a Cargnel custom Winchester M42. The deeply cut floral style scroll is shaded by a finely stippled background and covers 100% of the receiver. The barrel has a 3” wedge of engraving, and the trigger guard is engraved as well. There is fine gold wire embellishing the perimeter of the receiver, the muzzle, and a bit on the trigger guard. The serial numbers are inlaid in gold. The left side game scene is fabulous, with highly detailed, large, raised gold pheasants flushing with a farmhouse scene in the background. The right side is embedded with 6 highly detailed gold doves. There is a squirrel scene at the back top of the receiver. If you study fine engraved guns you will note that the details in the gold inlays, the depth and sharpness of the scroll cuts, the perfection of execution, is what separates the masterpieces from the wannabees. There are a lot of mediocre engraved M42’s for sale and if you are spending this kind of money for fine gun art, you should closely scrutinize the quality of the work. Few offered for sale at any price will compare to this masterpiece from Mr. Cargnel. The bonus is the stunning French walnut stocks, checkered to perfection.
