Manufacturer was New England Firearms, the interim corporation and manufacturing facility on the old Gardner, MA, H&R plant grounds from 1986 until 2000. From its NF Prefix serial number, it was manufactured in 1991. Construction is steel metal, with polymer forend spacer and trigger guard; and with figured American Hardwood buttstock and forend. Chambering is 20 gauge, 2 3/4 inch and 3 inch shells interchangeably. Barrel is 25 1/2 inch, with shoulder tapering in the chamber area, and .913 outside diameter at the forend and .760 osd at the muzzle. Bore diameter at the muzzle is .598. This shotgun is Not designed for slugs or for steel shot, lead or bismuth shot only is the way to go with it. Sight is plain brass bead front. Barrel has an ejector that will sling the shell or hull out. Release is right side receiver mounted. That part is southpaw friendly, but the buttstock has a 3/4 inch right hand cant that favors right handed shooters. Buttstock length of pull is an adult 14 1/4 inches from the .335 smooth faced steel trigger to the end of the 1/2 inch factory butt plate. Overall length is 40 3/4 inches; and weight empty is 5 pounds 10 ounces with center of gravity at the breech pivot bolt. Wood is plain oil finish. Note that this SB1 has blue steel sling swivel studs installed correctly. Surface detractions on this H&R are moderate, principally finish freckling and toning on the metal. Bluing and case color on the metal is strong throughout. Wood scouring is minimal to moderate. We rate this Topper as Very Good, 80 percent vicinity by our estimate, but photos ought to suffice for our distinguished shoppers to judge finish grade for themselves.
