L. C. Smith "O" Grade 12 Ga. Attributed to William A. Pinkerton c. 1907 Guns > Shotguns > L.C. Smith Shotguns
Description: This is a good L. C. Smith with 30" Damascus barrels in 12 gauge attributed to William A. Pinkerton of the Pinkerton Detective Agency, son of the founder. According to the Cody Firearms Museum Records Office, the gun was shipped January 17, 1907. The case colors have silvered and the blue only appears in a few protected areas. but the gun is in good condition and the mechanics and bores are very good. A 1/2" chip at the toe has been mended.

The Pinkerton National Detective Agency was founded in Chicago in 1850 by Allan Pinkerton (after a few years as a Chicago policeman and detective) as a result of his assistance in breaking up a counterfeiting gang. During the 1860’s he rose to fame by foiling an assassination attempt on President Lincoln. In 1871, the newly formed Dept of Justice hired the Pinkerton Agency as its investigative arm. They were famous for their motto, “We never Sleep”, which was paired with their famous private eye logo. They were hired to resolve union issues and strife on the railroad as well as to protect monetary shipments. In 1874, the Pinkertons tracked down part of the James Younger Gang, wanted for robbery, and killed John Younger. In 1884, Allan Pinkerton died and the control of the company transferred to his two sons William and Robert. Under their direction, the company prospered and by the turn of the century they employed over 2,000 agents and had 30,000 in reserve. Robert Pinkerton died in 1907 and William Pinkerton died in 1923.
