From the estate of a distinguished physician who served in the European Theater in World War II, and who practiced in Shelby [Memphis] and Hardeman Counties in Tennessee, comes this very attractive and well preserved specimen of the Colt .32 Automatic Pistol, model of 1903. From its 142000 range serial number, it was manufactured very early in the eleventh year of production, 1913. The 1903 was John Moses Browning’s Brainchild, and an important precursor to the venerable 1911 series. Type is blowback single action semi-automatic with internal hammer, despite its name of Pocket Hammerless. Manufacturer was Colt’s Patent Firearms Manufacturing of Hartford, CT. Construction is entirely blue steel, but with color casehardened smooth faced trigger and matching safety and disassembly lever. This specimen is a type III, with slide integral barrel bushing. Magazine is circa 1930s unmarked factory 7 shot. Caliber, of course, is .32 ACP. Safety system is single side locking lever with grip safety but no firing pin safety. That means you can pop the muzzle hard enough with a loaded chamber and the round will ignite. Weight empty is 24 ounces. Grips are original and excellent. Surface detractions on this M1903 are moderate, principally edge whitening and finish freckling, as the photos show. We rate it as Very Good, 75 to 80 percent vicinity by our estimate, but photos ought to suffice for our distinguished shoppers to judge finish grade for themselves. It is excellent mechanically; bore, chamber, and mechanism are all bright, clean, and excellent. The 1903 Pocket Model was popular with civilians, army officers, and notorious criminals like Al Capone, Bonnie Parker, and John Dillinger.
