FACTORY ENGRAVED SAVAGE 1899 Guns > Rifles > Savage Rifles > Model 95/99 Family
Description: This rifle was built in 1901. It is factory engraved with the fancy "Rival" engraving and checkering. The engraving takes up both sides and the top of the receiver. The engraving is of game scenes and scroll work. Engraving was done by Mr. Enoch Tue. The underside of the receiver has the name of the original purchaser engraved on it. The pistol grip stock and the fore-end are American Walnut with checkering and scroll work. The rifle is a solid frame. Has a 26" full octagon barrel. Front sight is a blade with dovetail. Rear sight is a Lyman butterfly and a Lyman peep sight. It is a .303 Savage cal. It has a carry sling installed. It is not drilled for a scope. I have a letter from John Callahan at Savage stating some of things I have mentioned. This gun has signs of wear but all the "experts" I have shown it to say it is in excellent condition, about 90 to 95%. I don't know much about guns so I'm not sure how they came to that conclusion. The bluing on the receiver is gone, accept for a small amount underneath. Some say it is suppose to be that way and others say it has been worn off from use. The stock has small dents from being used and the fore-end has some flat spots on the checkering from it being handled. No cracks or chips. My father bought this rifle from the original owner long before I was born and he rarely ever used it. I got the gun when my father passed away in 1984 and I have never fired it. It breaks my heart to sell this gun but things being what they are (thanks to our wonderful government) I haven't been able to get a job. So, something has got to go. I have researched the value of this gun over the past 20 years and boy is it all over the place. Up until about 3 years ago most appraisals were around $40,000+, others were around $30,000. Several said it was priceless because there was no track record. Now days the value seems to range anywhere from around $8,000 to around $27,000. It is hard to sell something when no one knows what it's worth. So, I am going to ask somewhere in the middle (I'm sure someone will let me know if I'm way off on my price) and I will consider any REASONABLE offers. I welcome any questions or comments or information anyone might have. I have tried to be as accurate as I can in the discription. I have some better pictures of the engraving but I can't seem to get them uploaded. If you are interested I will e-mail them to you. Thank you.
