Now into its 2nd century & with 2 Royal Warrants, Holland & Holland has been crafting fine English side-by-side shotguns since 1835. H&H builds less than 100 custom guns a year, each unique and each of uncompromising quality. The Royal is their flagship SxS. Introduced in 1885 in its hammerless side-lock format, it is still made today. Simply called the Royal Side-by-Side or simply the “Game Gun”, the gun has profoundly influenced shotgun design for over 150 years. Every gun is “bespoke” (custom-built) to buyer specs, requiring 750 hours or more of precision assembly. The choice of well-heeled, discerning upland shooters world-wide for over a century, H&H Royal SxS's define “sporting elegance”. Simple to use with their “self-open” actions, nimble, rugged, and easy-to-maintain, these classy doubles are ideally suited for their purpose. Light with slim barrels at < 6 lbs this finely balanced package is very responsive with excellent shouldering, control, and follow-through.
This 20 ga is a fine example of the classic H&H SxS – richly blued barrels, lavishly engraved case-hardened receiver, and high-grade walnut. H&H's “self-opening” action, which the company has used since 1922, speeds reloads by popping the action open as soon as the smoothly pivoting thumb latch unlocks it. Auto ejectors then kick spent rounds from the 2 ¾” chambers quickly. In 1908 H&H added the “detachable lock” feature, a finger release that dismounts the side action plates for quick inspection & cleaning. The proofed 0.615” 20g bores are constricted to .600” (MOD) in both barrels. Balance is excellent, with the shotgun's balance point right at the hinge. Dual triggers control the independent internal side-lock actions. Lavish “Royal”-pattern scroll engraving covers the entire receiver and side-plates on the expertly case-hardened receiver. A muzzle mounted silver-color bead gives an excellent and natural sight picture. Crafted from richly figured dark European walnut, the straight-grip stock and splinter fore-end are hand-finished to a soft luster and superbly fit to the metal. Hand checkering adorns the wrist, fore-end, and butt of the stock.
Built in 1955 or so (s/n 362xx), this shotgun is in NRA (Modern) Excellent condition. Part of a collector's estate, this shotgun appears to be in good working order and has been lovingly cared for. The action functions properly, and the ejectors work as expected. The action is extremely smooth with solid lock up, and the gun disassembles easily. The bore is mirror-bright perfect. Receiver original finish is rated at 90%. Case colors are not as vibrant as new, but are still well-defined. Greens and yellows have begun to give way to blues, browns, and ambers. Lettering and engraving are still 100% – sharp and clear. Screw heads are timed and in perfect condition, and no dings or mars appear on the metal. Barrel finish is also about 90%. In normal light the barrels still show rich bluing except for light muzzle wear, but strong, focused light reveals hints of streakiness and the beginning of a plum patina. A few light dings, scuffs and mars, mostly on the outer barrel contours, show up on the barrel steel. Wood finish is just under 100%. The few issues noted are 6 small dents on the stock that do not break the surface and can be seen only in the right light (mostly right side), ½ doz more of the same type at the fore end tip, and about a dozen crushed facets in several small patches on the left wrist checkering.
