Description: Here is an authentic, operable transitional piece from the U.S. Army’s Springfield Armory in Massachusetts, an 1870 Trapdoor .50 Center Fire improvement upon the Allin Conversions of the late sixties. Barrel is correct 32 1/2 inches from muzzle to breech face, and length of pull is also the correct 13 1/4 inches from the center of the trigger to the center of the original steel buttplate. Serial number is 34,000 range. This rifle has old hand written cartouches JRB Nantucket, so this rifle probably saw action guarding Cape Cod; or, since it came to us from a West Tennessee Estate, possibly it saw guard duty during Reconstruction in the South. Finish is a good even brown patina, etchy at places but with no substantial surface pitting. Bore is Fair to Good with strong rifling visible, about 30% light pitting. Rifling is relatively weak in about the final 10 inches toward the muzzle with circular ribs appearing in that section. Barrels outer surface is smooth and uniform. This rifle is mechanically sound, and appears to be in fine firing condition if a person has means to feed it with .50 centerfire black powder load ammunition. Bayonet is period correct U.S. Military, simply marked U.S. / J on its tang. The bayonet has faint amounts of original bluing left in its blade concaves, but it otherwise entirely etchy brown patina. Wood has substantial scouring, as the photos show, and original duty period hand markings lightly on both sides of the buttstock portion. There is an action bolt crack on the left side tang area with a small amount of separation as the photos show, but the only other wood cracks are a half dozen or so small weathering marks near the buttplate, and these exhibit no separation. We classify the rifle and its bayonet as Good, but photos ought to suffice for prospective owners to judge finish grade for themselves. It is Very Good mechanically. Don't try, either, to circumvent any law; for example, a California civilian may not buy a high capacity magazine and have it shipped to his brother-in-law in Nevada. That is a felony.
