Here is a specimen of Remington’s workhorse 870 slide action shotgun, Express Variant, with a 21 inch retro vent rib barrel, expertly cut and crowned to 21 inch Cylinder Bore. Surface detractions are extensive, with extensive spotting and freckling on the barrel, extensive whitening on the magazine tube and even some superficial pitting on the tube; and similar appearance on the sides of the Express receiver. This is a local civilian owned shotgun, and we have no idea whether the barrel chamber has been lengthened to accommodate 3 inch shells. The receiver is certainly 3 inch capable, because all Expresses are. The Magazine Extension brings the capacity up to 8 + 1 rounds of 2 3/4 inch shells, and the extension is all factory Remington, parkerized finish. Note the Pachmayr Vindicator Forend. We rate this shotgun’s finish as Good, sixty to seventy percent range by our estimate. Photos, at any rate, ought to suffice so that our distinguished shoppers can judge finish grade for themselves. It is excellent mechanically; bore, chamber, and mechanism are all bright, clean, and excellent. Overall length is only 41 1/2 inches; weight empty is 8 pounds. Replacement pricing on the 870 Home Defense type shotguns is upwards of $500 apiece in our area. The Pachmayr forend and factory extension run well over $100 combined for replacement cost.
