Description: The legendary, and I might add, hard-to-find war-time production (1944) Finnish M-39 is being offered at auction to the discriminating buyer who knows that this bolt action rifle is considered by many to be the pinnacle of development for WW 2 battlefield rifles. This marvelous example of Finnish ingenuity (taking, for example, the humble and rather crude Mosin-Nagant 91/30 and refining it into a superb and deadly accurate battle rifle) and Finnish determination to remain free of the Russian yoke comes with the original and undamaged stock (with the exception of a small plug on the left rear side of the butt stock) and an early hex receiver. The hex receivers were built before all the production short-cuts introduced under the demands of war and are much preferred by collectors. The Finns extensively reworked the Russian 91/30 to make it almost an entirely new rifle: they added a new shortened and thickened barrel, greatly improved the sights, and beefed up the stock with a semi pistol grip, among other things. The "greatest" (that is, the highest scoring WW 2 sniper) used a standard issue, pre-war Finnish Mosin-Nagant to rack up an incredible 500 confirmed kills in the space of 9 months. That should say something about the inherent capability of these rifles. Also, these rifles were never imported in great numbers: I think around 30,000 altogether, and of course not all of them were of equal quality. Some had broken stocks; some were badly pitted from rust; and some had worn-out barrels--all things you might reasonable expect from wartime turn-ins. Really good ones, with original, undamaged stocks; with original cleaning rods still attached; with all original and complete hardware--with everything pretty much just as it was issued in 1944--well, those were not so plentiful. In my opinion, you're not just buying a 75-year-old surplus rifle: you're buying a piece of history. And a piece of history torn out of the pages of one of the greatest testaments to the courage of a proud and independent people resisting an overwhelming invasion by a vastly superior, and merciless, horde giving all but no hope to the beleaguered underdog. It reminds me of the story of Thermopylae. Anyway, I guess that's one way of thinking about it. Another way is simply that this is a great rifle in its own right, and would make a prized addition to any collection of surplus military firearms.
