We detect no re-importer marks on this Lee-Enfield No 4 Mark I British .303 Rifle. Note that its rear sight has been removed, and it has been fitted with a Remington 788 Rear sight – an item that is high demand in its own right. Front sight needs a matching blade, but is dovetailed for easy installation. We believe that this rifle was sporterized some time during the 1970s, and it is really in pretty good shape. Rifling lands are all pronounced, and we detect no pitting other than the frequently encountered light crustiness in the rifling grooves, common on many old military rifles. External metal surfaces are clean and smooth, and we detect no external pitting anywhere. Brass buttplate is original and intact. The black enamel finish on the stock is what we classify as hillbilly sporterization. Sometimes we get older military rifles that were actually brought back by Veterans of the World Wars; we doubt, however, that that is the case with this one since the markings and serial numbers have been reiterated on the left side of the receiver, as the photos show. This old rifle has been, right up until last deer season, in the fields of West Tennessee harvesting white tail deer until its young third-generation owner decided to trade it in on a Marlin .22, one that got better gas mileage after we were unable to supply bargain .303 ammunition anymore.
