SERIAL NUMBER 6!!! S&W .38 SAFETY HAMMERLESS, NEW DEPARTURE, 1ST MODEL, 1ST YEAR PRODUCTION FROM 1887 !! Guns > Pistols > Smith & Wesson Revolvers > Pre-1899
Description: Beautiful S&W New Departure .38 Safety Hammerless, 1ST Model manufactured circa 1887 with a SINGLE DIGIT serial number – SN 6 !! The S&W 1ST Models are identified by the "Z-bar" top latch which was changed for subsequent models of the New Departure. This superb condition example is serial number 6 and features a top break design with a pinned round blade front sight, notch rear sight; a standard two line address with patent dates on top of the solid fluted barrel rib; a 5 round auto-eject cylinder; a casehardened trigger and blued trigger guard ; a checkered back-strap safety and black hard rubber grips with S&W monograms. The inside of the left grip strap is stamped "R-N" in a rectangle with a “471” stamping indicating that this revolver was factory re-nickeled (R-N) in April of 1971. The condition is very fine as factory refinished with 98% + of the nickel finish remaining. The metal shows only minor collector type handling marks. The hammer retains strong traces of original case colors. The grips are excellent. The action is smooth. A scarce single digit Smith & Wesson revolver from the 19TH Century, and approximately 124 years old!!! SN 6 stamped into base of grip frame and into face of cylinder.
