PK451 The Salant Company was an important part of Post-World-War-II industrialization in the rural South, and many of our best citizens, mostly female, worked for the local plant here in Henderson, Tennessee from about 1950 until it closed in the 1970s. For historians, not quite mill culture but certainly factory culture. Here is a very nice relic from that period, manufactured by U.S. Workers in Fremont, Ohio, also a rural bunch over near the Indiana Line. Christy Machine Company is still in business, thankfully, and that can be explained from having good local management and ownership with strong rural work habits. We had the latter, the work habits, but Salant was Yankee owned, out of New York City, and the ownership had little contact with the workers here in Tennessippi. Construction on this particular knife reminds us of Camillus advertisers from the period. This is actually a lo ck bl ade small carton knife that has a release button on its left obverse side that allows the blade to protrude from, or retract into, the chrome steel body. Blade length is only 1 7/8 inches opened, overall length 5 1/4 inches opened, and 3 1/4 inches closed including the slotted tail piece. This particular knife comes to us from a local retiree’s collection, and its surface detractions are minimal, only occasional light small toning spots that affect no more than 10 percent of its surfaces by our estimate. Obverse mechanism tang reads Christy Trademark , Patent # 2,074,640; and the reverse tang reads Made In USA By The Christy Co. Fremont Ohio 43420. We estimate it was manufactured in the late 1960s or early 1970s. We’re offering this fine little U.S. Factory Culture artifact for only $ 49.00.
