Bid: Time Left: (Ended) Shipping: $60.00 Accepted Payment Methods: Returns: No Returns Description: Up for auction is a terrific find (maybe "miraculous" is a better term): an all- original, 1898 Springfield Armory Krag-Jorgense infantry rifle in 30-40 Krag purchased from a private estate sale. Originally acquired many years ago, it has sat unmolested in a gun room along with several other pieces I purchased at the same time. This is not a "parts" gun; nor has it been altered, sporterized, or cut-down. All components--bolt, trigger assembly, magazine, barrel bands, stock, etc--are those that the rifle came with in 1898. The wood is without scrapes, dings, gouges, splits, or stock repairs. Metal parts still have most of their bluing left. The barrel shows no rust (although rifling is worn; I haven't shot it, not sure anyone would want to shoot it) and retains a rich blue-black color. The bolt is buttery smooth, just what you would expect from a Krag-Jorgensen. Lugs, bolt face, and chamber mouth all look good; no noticeable wear. (Can't check head space because I don't have a gauge, but from all appearances the rifle is in perfectly functioning condition.) These rifles are a unique and fascinating piece of American military history. I don't need to tell you that Springfields in this condition are rare, possibly near extinct. This rifle, in my opinion, deserves to be in a museum, or in the private collection of a very discriminating collector. I don't know when you'd ever find another example in as good a condition as this one.
