Originally manufactured as the P14 Enfield in .303 caliber for the British in 1914, the design was converted to .30-06 caliber and re-named the M1917 for American use when the US entered the war in 1917. Extremely rugged and reliable weapons, over 2 million were produced for the US Army in WW1. This is a very low serial number 66xxx. Not re-built or parkerized for WW2 re-issue, the rifle retains 90+% of its original bluing with some wear at the muzzle. The bore is in excellent shape, the lands and grooves still crisp and sharp. The stock has some minor dings and dents and there is one small (3/4") long crack at the left front of the receiver but overall the stock is in excellent shape for an almost 100 year old rifle. The inspectors' cartouches are present. Serial numbers do not match Some of these .30-06 rifles were sent to England and Canada for use in WW2. These were painted with a red stripe on the butt or fore stock to avoid confusion with the earlier P14 .303 version of the rifle. The fore stock of this rifle has an arsenal painted red stripe.
