Relevant date code letters on this Remington 552 A Speedmaster are K M, May of 1965. This is a local rifle that has taken its share of squirrels, rabbits, and other garden varmints in neighboring Gibson County, Tennessee, up until the time that its original owner's grandchildren, certainly not vegetable farmers, had it in their car along with other chemicals and the neighborhood lawmen promptly confiscated both guns and drugs. We have promised to find it a good Christian home. Surface wear is moderate to extensive. Original Walnut stock and forend show extensive scouring, but the original semi-glossy finish is still majority strength, about 80 percent on the buttstock by our estimate. Metal surfaces are similar strength on our view. We rate this 552 ADL Remington as Very Good, but photos should suffice for prospective owners to judge finish grade for themselves. Barrel is the longer, older style 24 inch with 17 rounds of shorts capability in the magazine. Bore, chamber, and mechanism are all bright, clean, and excellent. Sights are standard ADL topped blade front and gloss black anodized leaf-and-step rear. Replacement price on the only available descendant, the 552 BDL, is $600 or more in our area, if a person can even find one, and it is the last man standing for autos capable of handling .22 Shorts.
