For any of us who remember watching Whoopi Goldberg’s 1993 Interview on 60 Minutes where she told about her over and under 12 gauge she kept for protection, our Matter-of-time thoughts are now 20 years off. Here, at long last, is an Over and Under designed specifically for defensive or tactical operations. This is Mossberg International’s model HS12R, special edition Thunder Ranch tactical over/under. Manufacturer is Khan Arms of Üzümlü, Northeastern Turkey. Importer is Mossberg International of Eagle Pass, Texas. Type is Over-and-under box lock shotgun. Construction is entirely steel, with black anodized alloy trigger guard and rails. Chambering is for 12 gauge, 2 3/4 inch or 3 inch [or our Aguila 1 3/4 inch] shells. Barrels are 18 1/2 inch Cylinder Bore, .722 vicinity at the muzzle. Capacity, of course, is 2 rounds. Sights are welded steel ramp type front with red fiber optic insert. The rear sight doubles as a winged white bar notch rear sight and 8 slot Picatinny rail. Front rail is 7 slot on the lower barrel. Both rails are black anodized alloy, and accept any Weaver type sight or accessory mount. Mechanism is one piece extractor block with barrel selector on the tang mounted safety lever, mechanical transfer as opposed to recoil transfer between the firing pins. Forend and buttstock are contoured with checkered panel surfaces, 1 1/2 inches buttstock drop at the comb and 2 1/8 inches at the heel. Stock is canted a full inch to the right, so this shotgun will not be southpaw friendly without stock work by a competent gunsmith. Length of pull is fully 14 inches from the smooth faced .295 trigger to the end of the buttstock. Finish is non glare matte blue and black anodized for the alloy surfaces. Both rails are roll pinned to their steel bases. Overall length is 38 1/2 inches, and weight empty is 6.75 pounds with center of gravity 1 1/4 inch forward of the breech face. This shotgun comes in its factory Mossberg relabeled box with instruction manual and Mossberg Warranty statement, and with a yellow Mossberg cable lock. It is what we call a factory Demo, serving as a sales rep’s gun and at industry trade shows like the annual SHOT show at Las Vegas, as a Vegas showgirl. Surface detractions are minimal to negligible, only faint amounts of contact streaking, as the photos show. We rate it as Excellent in Box, but photos ought to suffice for our distinguished shoppers to judge finish grade for themselves. Bore, chambers, and mechanism are all bright and clean. Whoopi’s Browning, or whatever it was, was a $1500 shotgun 20 years ago. Replacement pricing on this shotgun on maverickarms com is $549.
