From a collection near Fort Campbell, Kentucky, comes very attractive FR8, Fusil Reformado, Spanish Mauser chambered in .308 Winchester caliber. Type is large ring Mauser bolt action rifle. Manufacturer was Fabrica de Armas of Coruna, Spain, and so marked. Importer was Century Arms, so marked on the side of the barrel. From is FR8-07000 range serial number, it is probably first year production, 1954, or 1955 at the latest. This rifle served alongside the newly adopted CETME rifles in the Spanish Army, and with mounted officers of the Guardia Civil. By our poor memory, this rifle was imported some time in the 1990s. Construction is entirely steel metal, with Spanish walnut stock and barrel guard. Barrel is 18 inch, with six groove right hand 1:12 rifling, .610 outside diameter behind the muzzle collar, and .700 osd at the stock junction. Six slot grenade compatible muzzle brake brings the barrel’s overall length out to 20 inches. Barrel has a distinctive bayonet mounting assembly beneath it, on the order of the CETME system, and a correct Brazilian I.N.I. bayonet with polymer scabbard is included. Front sight is CETME type elevation adjustable, ring protected post, with dial calibrated aperture and notch raised rear sight. Action is top loading, with stripper clip slot, magazine holds 5 rounds of .308 or 7.62x51 NATO caliber ammunition. Mechanism is straight bolt handle Mauser, with top cowl 3 position safety. Trigger is .250 arched center steel, pulls two stage at 4 1/2 pounds, with minimal to moderate felt creep and overtravel. Sling is original Spanish Army issue, with eyelet swivel and the front sight and on the left side of and lower edge of the buttstock. Length of pull is 13 inches, with a 1 inch right hand cant. Overall length is 38 3/4 inches. Weight empty no bayonet is 8 pounds 2 ounces, with center of gravity 1 inch back of the chamber mouth. Finish is military parkerized. This rifle has undergone one arsenal refinish. Surface detractions are moderate, principally edge wear to the metal and contact scouring to the wood. We rate it as Very Good Refinish, 75 percent vicinity by our estimate, but photos ought to suffice for our distinguished shoppers to judge finish grade for themselves. Bore, chamber, and mechanism are all bright and clean, with sharp clean rifling and no pitting. Bayonet shows sharpening wear to its center section, as the photos show. FR8 Rifles were an improvement over the more common FR7 conversions. They often command prices well over $600 apiece.
