Ruger’s P series pistols never won any beauty contests, but they repeatedly won on reliability, simplicity, economy, and dependability. Here is a low numbered, original P85. Manufacturer and warrantor is Sturm, Ruger & Company of Prescott, Arizona. From its 300 prefix, higher range serial number it was manufactured in 1989, only the Third Year of Production. It served in Israel with the Mishteret Y'Israel, the Israeli Civilian Police. Import marks are on the right side of the frame, as required by the 1968 Gun Control Act. Construction is steel slide assembly, internal parts, and trigger, all built into a lightweight alloy frame, with alloy guide rod and polymer grip panels. Type is hammer fired, locked breech, traditional double and single action, semi automatic pistol. This is the standard lever safety variant. Main safety is ambidextrous levers that also decock the pistol; it also has the firing pin block that guards against accidental firing if the pistol is dropped or bumped. The main lever safely decocks the firearm when the shooter decides to cease firing or put the hammer at rest after loading the pistol. It is fully ambidextrous, both for its levers and for its magazine release. Please note that this specimen has NOT undergone the Mark II Modification and its lever is Not stamped. Caliber is 9mm Luger, 9mm Parabellum, 9x19, call it what you will, THE 9mm. Barrel is 4 inch stainless, six groove 1:10 rifling, with full length fluted steel guide rod. Sights are combat 3 dot, pinned securely into place on the slide, drift adjustable for windage. Trigger is .365 smooth faced, with .323 commander style serrated spur hammer. Travel is 1 1/4 inches; double action pull is 11 pound vicinity and smooth, with a two stage, 6 1/2 pounds single action that yields minimal felt creep and overtravel. Magazine is original factory steel, made for Ruger by Check-Mate, blued steel 15 round, so 15 + 1 fully loaded capacity. Grips are serration fluted black polymer. Overall length is 7 1/4 inches by 5 1/2 inches height; 1.273 frame thickness beneath the ejection port. Weight empty is 32 ounces, centered behind the trigger. Finish is matte blue slide and black matte anodized alloy frame. Surface detractions are moderate, principally contact wear on the left side of the slide, with edge wear and occasional scouring here and there. We rate this P85 as Good, perhaps Very Good, 70 to 75 percent vicinity by our estimate, but photos ought to suffice for our distinguished shoppers to judge finish grade for themselves. Bore, chamber, and mechanism are all bright and clean. We estimate it has been fired 1,000 times, no rounds at all for a P series Ruger.
