Scarce “Custer Range” Springfield M1873 Trapdoor Carbine Guns > Rifles > Antique (Pre-1899) Rifles - Ctg. Misc.
Description: Caliber .45-70, 22" barrel with standard military sights, case-hardened high-arch breech block, hammer, and lockplate. Breechblock stamped “MODEL/1873" with eagle, crossed arrows, and “US”, Lockplate stamped with eagle and “US/SPRINGFIELD/1873". Walnut stock with faint inspector’s cartouche, saddle ring, and single barrel band with sling swivel. Butt plate stamped “US/Y87" on tang. Breech with stamped SN 36388, only a few numbers off known 7th Cavalry guns from Little Bighorn. Condition very good with traces of bluing in protected areas. Wood with minor wear and blemishes, a small chip from buttstock and sliver repairs and hairline cracks on fore-end. Original and unaltered. These carbines in unaltered condition are so scarce and desirable that M1873 trapdoor rifles are often cut down and disguised as carbines to fool unsuspecting buyers. Comes with copies of pages from John DuMont’s book “Custer Battle Guns”, showing known examples in the same serial # range, and copy of article in “Man-At-Arms” magazine about the 7th Cavalry guns. Ex-Norm Flayderman gun.
