Description: L.C. Smith 2E 20ga. 1 of 404 MADE, RARE, 6LBS., AFFORDABLE!

L.C. Smith produced its first 20ga. gun in 1907. Small bore graded guns in the pre-1913 Elsies are very hard to find, and certainly 404 20 ga. guns produced in Grade 2 represents rarity, with likely less than 350 or so left on the planet intact and useable. This gun, serial number 6228E made in 1910, is in sound condition, showing honest wear and original finishes. We contemplated restoring this fine little Elsie, but thought we might offer it up as is for those that prefer the 101 year history this little gun owns. At 6lbs. 1oz. and balanced 1/8” ahead of the hinge pin, it is delightful in hand and quick to shoulder, and has nice scroll and game bird engraving representative of the Golden Years of vintage American doubles. Inspected inside and out, it is ready for your upland and clay target needs and is a good investment opportunity. L.C. Smith guns are really gaining in popularity, yet are still affordable when compared to Fox or Parker. You can no longer touch a Fox or Parker engraved 20ga. ejector gun for less than $5000. The Elsie is still a good buy and a great shotgun.

The 26” nitro steel barrels retain 85% blue with most loss at the forend area, excellent bores, .614 bore diameter both barrels, choked F/F (.025/.025, can be altered to your specs for $70 per barrel), minimum barrel wall thickness of 37 thousandths, 2 ¾” chambers, ribs tight and barrels ring true, no dents or pits just honest wear, silver mid bead and ivory front bead, barrels tight on breech face and hinge pin like a new gun, ejectors strong and timed. The barrels can be properly rust blued for an additional $225 within 2 weeks of purchase, or talk to me about other possible restoration services.

The action is a true sidelock, featherweight with clear engraving, excellent screws, action tight with lever well right of center, traces of case color, crisp double triggers, 95% trigger guard blue, all in excellent mechanical condition. The action was recently stripped, inspected, cleaned, and lubed with photos of the locks available. The finish on the receiver is silvered naturally, as L.C. Smith used a nickel steel in their receivers.

The wood is nicely figured French walnut with excellent oil finish and factory checkering, a few minor splits have been repaired by Vintage Firearms, head of stock in excellent condition with photos to demonstrate such, 14” LOP to butt plate, 2 5/8” drop at heel, 1 5/8” drop at comb, 3/16” cast off for excellent modern dimensions (can be bent to your specs for about $180 within 10 days of purchase), excellent wood to metal fit, really excellent wood on this 101 year old gun. A proper period bad can be added if you need more LOP within 10 days of purchase.

I personally collect pre-1913 Elsies, especially small bores. They are rarely offered for sale and I have only seen a handful in the last 10 years. This gun is an honest, unmolested example of a nice early Grade 2 ejector gun. It is lightweight, perfectly balanced, dynamic in hand, and mechanically excellent making for a great upland bird gun (I would alter the chokes, fyi). If restored guns appeal to you, we can do a full restoration for you. A rare gun, again less than 400 on the planet, it will continue to grow in value as you enjoy its use.

There are more photos upon request. THERE IS A 30 DAY WARRANTY ON THIS GUN. Please see my other fine Vintage Firearms on this website.
