Mario Beschi- Ithaca Classic Double 20ga. AS NEW, AWESOME GUN
In the late 1990’s Steve Lamboy resurrected the Ithaca NID double shotgun under the banner name “Ithaca Classic Doubles”. From my understanding, Mr. Lamboy had the rights to the patents and design of the original Ithaca guns and faithfully reproduced the guns as “reproductions” using modern machining technologies and materials. Much of the work was contracted through the Italian firm Mario Beschi. The guns are faithful to the original Ithaca NID in engraving and checkering patterns and the NID design was brutishly strong and reliable. Unfortunately the company did not survive and the Ithaca Classic Double production ceased around 2003. There were many guns in the production line at the time and those guns were completed and imported by various prominent gun dealers. This particular gun was imported by the late, great Thad Scott. These are very well made guns and hand engraved to perfection. They represent the best bargain on a fine American designed double available today, in my humble opinion.
This little 20ga. is AS NEW IN EVERY WAY. NO MARKS, NO WEAR, JUST NEW. It has 28” barrels choked IC/LM (.006/.012), mirror bores, 35 thousandths minimum barrel wall thickness, tight ribs, 100% in all ways. Ejectors are strong and timed, 2 ¾” chambers.
The receiver is hand engraved to fine detail and is an exact copy of the NID Grade 4 pattern, with a duck on the left side, woodcock on the bottom, and a pheasant on the right side, all nicely done. Case color is 100%, gold triggers show a little use and are crisp and clean, lever is well to the right, excellent screws, action tight on hinge and face, gorgeous.
The wood is wonderfully figured walnut with elaborate flor-de-lis checkering pattern typical of Ithaca Gun Co. The wood is oil finished with a ½” factory solid brown rubber pad that is leather faced; CLASSIC. The forend is equally figured and checkered. The English stock has 14 7/8” LOP to the end of the pad, 14 3/8” to the end of the wood, 2” drop at heel, 1 3/8” drop at comb for a pleasantly modern shooting dimensions. Stock dimensions can be altered to your specifications by my people for a modest extra cost. Just ask me about it. There are no scratches, marks, splits, or repairs on the wood.
This 6 1/2lb. double balances right on the hinge pin and points like a dream. It is a classic American double design and reproduced to historical perfection. The only difference that I can see is they stocked the gun to fit the modern man and shooting techniques. You just can’t find a nicer double shotgun for the price. Everything I have seen in the price range is laser engraved, machine checkered, and not up to “snuff”.
