This example was made during the "Continuation War" (after the German invasion of Russia in 1941) and is a great example of Finnish old-world craftsmanship. As with all the M-39 produced during the war years (as far as I'm aware), this has a 2-piece stock that accommodated the shortened stock for the new barrel that the Finns used on the captured Russian M91/30. But they are so expertly put together that the finger-joints in the stock are so finely finished that you have to look closely to find them. These Finnish M-39 rifles are, in my opinion, one of the finest rifles to come out of WW 2. Even though they are based on the Russian Mosin- Nagant, they are a far superior version. I've found them to be more accurate, more comfortable to shoot, and easier to handle. And what's even nicer, they shoot the plentiful 7.62x54R ammo. As a side note, you don't see these M-39's very much anymore, and certainly not in this condition (this one has a beautifully marbled walnut finish without all the usual dings, hack marks, and gouges). I believe the supply of good examples of these rifles is exhausted, except for possibly some cracked stock ones, so there won't be any more coming in to the country in this pristine condition. If you don't have one in your collection, now is the time. They'll only get harder to find and more expensive as time goes on. Don't confused these with the beat-up examples of the Russian 91/30's that are all over the place. These are superb rifles and wonderful shooters.
