Here is a great accessory for plain beadsight barreled 20 gauge shotguns, but it’s also collectable in its own right, even if a person doesn’t own a 20 gauge. This is an external variable choke tube that attaches onto a plain – not vent rib – 20 gauge barrel via a silver solder or similar gunsmithing process. Its installation will require a competent gunsmith or similarly skilled artisan, and we are not competent, or skilled, or gunsmiths. Manufacturer on this tube was Hartford Gun Choke Co., Inc. Construction entirely steel, blued finish externals, but with a conventional brass bead sight. The purpose of this Adjustomatic is to give the hunter flexibility, as with upland game and birds, for an open pattern on the first shot, and tighter patterns on subsequent shots as the shootee candidates distance themselves from the hunter. The choke tightens itself from friction and recoil, depending on how the operator sets it to begin with. This device was designed for use with small pellet lead shot, numbers 4 to 9 shot, in a 20 gauge plain beadsight barrel shotgun. It will not work on a 12 gauge shotgun. It will not work on a 16, 28, or .410 gauge shotgun. It will not work on a 20 gauge shotgun that has a rifled sight, or that has a ventilated rib. It will not work on a double barrel side by side or over and under shotgun. It will only work on Single Shots, Pump Actions, Bolt Actions, or Semi-Automatics chambered in 20 gauge, for use only with lead shot, and that have a plain bead sight barrel. It will not work on a barrel whose outside diameter exceeds .750 inches. It will need installation by a competent party. This choke device was manufactured sometime in the late 1950s or early 1960s, before the company reformed itself as Poly Choke, a still thriving establishment. The period of production flyer that is included has a Zip Code, which indicates earliest production of 1963, and the packaging, interestingly, has Vietnamese transliteration dated from April of 1965. This tube and its mates, then, were probably manufactured in 1964, and shipped to Vietnam so that the capitalist elites could pheasant and duck hunt. Most likely, they were in Communist Hands until the thawing of the 1990s. Condition is Mint or Near Mint, these have been stored in Chinese Army Cosmoline until they were recently cleaned. We found them in an old East Coast Warehouse, only a few of them. The 1964 price was $29.95 installed. We can’t quite match that, even if we wanted to.
