This rifle started life as a Sharps model 1865 Military Rifle with serial number 159697, it still shows the civil war inspectors cartouches, it may have been one of many that were converted to .50-70 about 1870 and used until the Trapdoor Springfield .45-70 Carbines were ready. At some later date a real Bridgeport Connecticut 1874 Sharps barrel serial numbered C,52448 that had been re-bored from .44 caliber to .50 caliber was fitted to it and chambered for .50-120 3 ¼” cases. The .50 caliber barrel has eight groove rifling and an excellent bore. The forend appears to be a modern replacement made in the original style.
