Since the Remington 870 was introduced in 1950, its patent expired long ago, hence these excellent tributes to the Wingmaster. This is Interstate Arms’s Hawk 982 Shotgun with aperture or Ghost Ring adjustable combat sights. Type is pump or slide action repeating shotgun. Manufacturer is Zonghzou Machine Works, Jin An China, one of the former Norinco operatives. Importer and warrantor is Interstate Arms in Billerica, Massachusetts. Construction is steel barrel, bolt, receiver, carrier, springs, trigger, hammer, and internal parts, with black polymer trigger housing, with graphite based polymer stock and forend. Chambering is 12 gauge, 2 3/4 inch and 3 inch shells interchangeably. Barrel is 18 inch Cylinder Bore, .718-.720 at the muzzle. Detent equipped lug is farther forward than the 870’s, so magazine capacity is five plus one round of 12 gauge 2 3/4 inch shells, or four plus one round of 3 inch magnum. Note the extended section of the magazine forward of the barrel lug. Magazine cap threads are the same as any 870, so any screw on accessory, flashlight or other, will readily attach, and will not go past the muzzle if it measures 3 1/4 inches or less. Mag follower is hi-viz heavy orange polymer. Forend is semi beavertail with checkered laterals. Slide assembly is double welded steel. Trigger is .219 smooth faced steel, photo specimen pulled two stage at 5 3/4 pounds with moderate felt creep and overtravel. Safety is 870 type right hand shooter, gunsmith reversable. Buttstock drop is optics friendly 1 3/4 inches at comb, and 3 inches at the heel. Stock is straight, with no right hand cast. Length of pull is 13 3/4 inches with a 1 inch black rubber recoil pad. Buttstock has an integral brass female sling stud escutcheon, and the forend is center drilled for stud bolts. Sight system is welded steel step blade, and wing protected windage and elevation adjustable .20 inch aperture, or Ghost Ring, rear. Receiver is 4 point drilled 6-48 thread, and the rear sight will remove for mounting a Picatinny base that is available from Interstate Arms. Weight empty is 7 pounds 9 ounces with center of gravity at the bolt. Each 982 Hawk comes in its factory box with protective wrapper, dessicant, and owners manual with Interstate Arms warranty service procedures. Replacement pricing on an 870 equipped like this one approaches $400. We’re offering the 981R Hawk 12 gauge in the photos, however, or one of its identical mates, each for only $ 219.00.
