It is a .69 caliber single shot muzzleloader with a 42 inch barrel. During it's period of use the Model 1842 Rifle was considered to be the best weapon of its type. This is an incredible collectors piece that would look awesome over your fireplace! It appears to have a Walnut stock which is aged and has some natural wood rot along the stock. It also has a 2 etched/engraved into the stock and the imprint of white number 2 as well. It appears to be all original having never been cleaned or polished. The barrel is dark and moderately pitted (light peppering),the lock area is marked with an Eagle over "US" forward from the hammer. The eagle is faint due to the dark areas of the barrel. This weapon holds at half and full cock.The original nipple appears present. It has an all steel ramrod with what appears to be "V3" markings and is tulip-headed. It once again does appear to have moderate pitting which obsures some of the overall markings. Also behind the hammer is "Harpers Ferry 1852" . The date of 1853 is on the very top center to the left of hammer on the barrel. The single sling swivel is present and it appears to have a brass front mounted sight. Condition: Very good plus. The rifle is completely original and is in "attic condition"; it has never been cleaned or "improved" and remains in the condition in which it was carried during the Civil War.This is a good looking untouched example of an important Civil War rifle that was widely used by both Confederate infantry and cavalry throughout the Civil War.
