Pocket Balkan Flintlock (Miquelet Lock) Pistol For Sale from Peter Bower | No feedback Yet View | Verified Seller | 15 Completed Sales View Sellers Items /UserImages/5488/950876364 15033931.jpg Description: A very interesting pocket Balkan or Turkish miquelet pistol, early 1800’s. It is unusual to find smaller-size miquelet pistols as the Ottomans preferred holster pistols or long pistols (rat-tails) that could be displayed in the leather belt sashes they wore. This one is probably the most-period-repaired pistol I have seen! The barrel, lock, buttcap, and sideplate are all original to the stock. As with most Ottoman pistols there is no provision for a ramrod. The barrel has been shortened, probably not by much as it matches the small lock. A portion of the lower cock has been brass-soldered, as has a portion of the upper steel – this may have been done when originally made as a way of masking a small crack in the original forged pieces? The lock works though the descending hook doesn’t always hold at full cock – all the springs are there, this may be a matter of oiling or light filing? The grip has been broken through and is now strengthened by a very old iron strip (c.1830/40’?) running from below the end of the barrel. This has been partially covered with a large brass oval ‘escutcheon plate.’ The buttcap, of traditional Turkish form, has been pulled off (probably during one of the numerous repairs) and is missing its end spurs. A, not visible, portion of the bottom LHS of the wooden butt is missing (probably during the same repair?). The front end of the barrel is attached by a typical cheap folded tin surround. Finally the original brass triggerguard has been partially torn off (perhaps when the grip split?) and been replaced by a cheap piece of tin. I believe both these tin repairs were period. Why would one buy a wreck like this? First, because you won’t find a cheaper original miquelet lock pistol if you need one for your collection. Second, because it has obviously seen extensive use (and pistols weren’t used for hunting – perhaps a bandit, perhaps a soldier’s sidearm?). Third if you can work with brass, restore the buttcap arms and triggerguard, replace the tin barrel ring with a brass one it probably had originally, you would have a $600+ pistol! Obviously you will require more photos. Ask, and I will send them!
