Description: This listing is for the exact Knive in the photos. From a local Tupelo area collection comes this 19th Century Bowie Knife. Manufacturer was Edward Barnes and Sons, markings read E. Barnes & Sons / 223 Solly Street / + Sheffield +, inside the bordered stamping. Solly Street Address indicates production between 1845 and 1868. The knife commemorates America’s Volunteer Spirit and Values, especially the black eye that the United States military gave to Spain in the Mexican War. Scabbard specifically honors General Zachary Taylor, so we estimate the knife was manufactured between his death in 1850 and the onset of the War Between the States. Known examples were presented to Mexican War and Civil War Officers, Veterans, and Politicians. Construction is chrome steel, stemmed one piece blade with nickel steel guard and handle frame, and with bone handle, probably walrus tooth or similar. Type is American Bowie Knife, and so marked. Barnes catered to the American market. Blade obverse is matte background relief, stylized as the photos show. Overall length is 15 3/8 inches with 11 inches blade length, down from probably an original 11 1/4. Blade width is 1 5/8 inch until the taper. Scabbard is leather center over wood and nickel steel / German silver framework. Weight is 17 ounces, balanced just forward of the tang. Note the damage to the handle panels, primarily the obverse one around the shield. Bolster Pins are still in place, however. Point is slightly nubbed as the photos show. Forward and upper areas show contact scouring, there is perhaps 10 percent etchy toning on the tang area as the photos show. Scabbard body shows extensive deterioration, contact damage to the point area, and absence of the clasp. Apart from the handle panel damage, we rate this knife as Good Condition, perhaps even Very Good. Similar specimens have fetched 4 figure pricing in numerous auctions. We’re offering the Bowie in the photos, however, complete with its original scabbard, for only $ 839.00.
