And this one really shines. The wood looks really good, the metal still has a ton of bluing left, the bore is still really healthy with lots of meat left in the rifling (take a look at the pictures of our range session with this rifle, and you can see for yourself how less-than-average "shots" can do with the rifle; and remember, we got these results without using the 3x9 scope since if we'd used the scope, it wouldn't accurately show the condition of the rifling or the rifle's potential accuracy). Of course, the bolt is like butter; that's quite typical of Enfields. The scope is a commercial 3x9 variable power. The mount is removable: it's held in place by a jam piece at one end and a screw clamp around the receiver at the other end. The rifle remains unaltered and original; no holes have been drilled and tapped. No permanent changes have been made to the rifle: it retains its original ladder rear sight and windage-adjustable front sight. The Mark lll was the last in a series of improvements made to the original SMLE's over the years starting in the early 1900's. Later wartime expedients and exigencies forced the British Empire to substantially streamline production of their infantry rifle, but they wisely kept all the endearing qualities of the "Old Smelly:" the fast-throw, ultra-smooth bolt and the potent but easy-shooting .303 cartridge. These SMLE's were once as ubiquitous as old, worn-out shoes at a Goodwill store. But the situation has dramatically reversed itself: now, good-condition, wartime production Enfields are very hard to find. No need to say that every military surplus collection must have an Enfield SMLE in it, and for the enthusiast, several Enfields showing all the different variations over the years. These rifles are very collectible--and are great shooters, to boot.
