Excellent Nimschke Engraved Smith & Wesson First Model .38 Single Action Baby Russian Revolver
"Baby Russian" top-break, auto ejecting revolver chambered in Smith & Wesson .38. Manufactured in 1877, one of just 25,548 First Models produced over a short two year production which spanned 1.
The classic "New York", near full coverage, deep chisel engraving is L. D. Nimschke's showing his pattern of decorative floral scrolls to the barrel, cylinder and frame. The back strap displays a line and scroll border with cross hatching on both sides of the top strap and the ejector housing. This pattern is beautifully illustrated in the book "L. D. Nimschke: Firearms Engraver". Top of the barrel rib is marked with a two line address/patent dates.
The matching serial number is marked on the butt, barrel latch, barrel and rear face of the cylinder.
Piece retains forty percent of the original nickel finish with all edges sharp and defined showing crisp, clear lettering and engraving.
The 3 1/4" Barrel and cylinder show bright with faint frosting. The ejector remains in like new condition with little to no wear, same for the rebound shield. The timing index's perfectly with positive lock-up and strong hammer retention.
The antique Mother-of-pearl grips are in above average condition exhibiting deep luster with a high shine. There is a small chip at the top of the left panel and a few hairline cracks barely noticeable to the fingernail.
