Action Type: Single Action Cap and Ball (Percussion) Revolver

Markings: The top of the barrel is marked “LEE” and surrounded by laurel leaves of valor, all 24 carat gold filled. The underside of the frame is marked with a circled Crowned “W” and “34”. The sides of the frame, barrel and loading lever are all fancy scroll engraved that is filled with gold, and the sides of the frame have three Stars in a box depicting the three stars he wore on his collar as General of the Confederate Army. The top, shoulders and sides of the barrel are also engraved with gold filling, and the cylinder is engraved with pictures of southern mansions, artillery, General Lee on horseback and the Lee family crest, with 13 stars in a gold band at the front of the cylinder depicting the 13 states of the Confederacy.

Barrel Length: 7 ½”

Sights / Optics: The front sight is a brass mortised cone fixed to the barrel. The rear sight is a “V” notch in the top of the hammer.

Stock Configuration & Condition: The grips are one piece fancy hardwood with a lacquered finish. The left grip has a 24 carat gold plated medallion at the top marked “Robert E. Lee” and with his picture. Excellent overall condition.

Type of Finish: The barrel, cylinder, frame and hammer are blued. The grip frame and backstrap appear to be gold plated.

Finish Originality: All Original

Bore Condition: The bore is bright and the rifling is sharp and deep. There is no erosion in the bore, and no indication in the bore or cylinder chambers that this revolver was ever fired outside the factory.

Overall Condition: This handgun retains about 98% of its metal finish. The left side of the barrel shows a few spots of thinning along its edges, a few light handling marks, and spots of surface frosting near the muzzle. The underside of the loading lever also has two or three small marks in the finish. The cylinder does not have a drag line. There are a few tiny marks in the backstrap and a few larger marks on the bottom of the backstrap. The screw heads are sharp.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. The cylinder lock-up is solid. We did not fire this handgun.

Box, Paperwork & Accessories: This pistol comes in a cherry wood case with key, accessories, and paperwork. The top of the case has a dark red leather insert that is gold stamped with a picture of Robert E. Lee on his horse Traveller and stamped around the border with a scroll pattern similar to that on the pistol. The lid is secured to the bottom section with a nearly full length brass colored piano hinge. The bottom of the case has a large brass keyhole, and its bottom surface is covered with brown felt. The inside of the case is lined with grey colored velvet and fitted for this revolver, a medallion, a power flask and two accessory compartments at the corners. There is also a brass plaque on the underside of the lid marked “The Official / Robert E. Lee / Commemorative Pistol / authorized by / U. S. Historical Society”. Also included is a pair of white cotton gloves for handling. More pictures upon request.
