The AK-47 (Avtomat Kalashnikova model 1947, Russian: ??????? ??????????? 1947) was designed for the Soviets in 1947 by Mikhail Kalashnikov. The rifle was used in many Eastern bloc nations during the Cold War and is still used extensively in the Third World today. Inexpensive to manufacture, the AK-47 is the world's most popular modern military rifle, with production in excess of 100 million units. As one Guns and Ammo writer once put it, "This little sucker is everywhere, and it will be with us for a long, long time." Its reputation for ruggedness, reliability and ease of field maintenance is also legendary, able to fire completely submerged or covered in mud. This rifle is current Izhmash Saiga / FIME production (Model SGL 26-61). Finish on the stamped Russian and and Izhmash-proofed reciever is matte black, as is the rest of the metal work. This specimen has a 16" barrel with cleaning rod mounted beneath. Chrome lining allows these rifles to handle cheap surplus "corrosive" ammunition without harm. A removeable modern AK-74-type muzzle break caps the 24x1.5mm right-hand threaded barrel. This rifle accepts all standard "hi-cap" AK magazines. One (1) 5-round Arsenal brand US polymer magazine will ship with the rifle. This model features an unobtrusive bolt-hold-open device above the trigger on the right side for added safety. The furniture consists of matte black Warsaw Pact (Russian) mil-spec fixed synthetic stock, grooved foreend, and checkered pistol grip. An AK-type scope mounting rail is permanently mounted on the left side of the receiver for easy attachment of an accessory rail and / or scope. Gray metal iron sights, graduated to 1000 meters, follow the standard AK pattern. A grooved metal butt plate with storage compartment caps the stock. Mil-spec-correct trigger guard, 2-stage fire control group, gas system and other internal components round out the package.
