Description: Even though the Medalist was the prototype for Bruce Browning it was the latest in production after the Nomad and Challenger. It was introduced for sale shortly after the Challenger in June or July 1962. The earliest serial number known to us is 17299T2. The search for early Medalist serial numbers continues and it is very possible production of the Medalist started before the serial number cited. Production and U. S. sales of the Medalist continued into 1975. Production by Fabrique Nationale Herstal Belgium continued into 1976 with sales primarily for the European market with the latest serial number known to us is 84242T76.

Grips on the Medalist were wrap-around checkered wood with a thumb rest. Two grip variations were made, one for right handed shooters and one for left handed shooters. There are at least two checkering patterns. A wood fore end was included.

The Medalist had a heavy, vent (five) rib, round barrel with a system to attach additional barrel weights. Barrel length is 171 mm which calculates to 6.7323 inches where one mm equals 0.03937 inches. The barrel length is commonly referred to as 6 ¾ inches long in the U. S. The dry-fire mechanism described earlier was an additional feature of the Medalist.

The Medalist came in a lockable case with red interior lining and a black leatherette outer covering. Included in the case was a tool to removing the fore end and for adding an attachment to install the barrel weights. Also included was block to hold 60 cartridges.

FN also calls this Medalist “Concours” which translates to competition if French. Browning's 1976 catalog states, “(The regular Medalist qualifies under NRA regulation)”. Emphasis added..The International Medalist is similar to the standard Medalist except with a 150 millimeter length round barrel with four vents rather than five. The system for adding barrel weights was eliminated. Grips are the same as on the standard Medalist except they are slightly thinner to accommodate the ISU requirements. The wood fore end was eliminated. It also had the dry-fire mechanism. The International Medalist was designed to meet the specifications of the International Shooters” Union (ISU) also sometimes called the Intentional Shooters' Association (ISA). To meet the ISU requirements it had to fit in a box 300 X 150 X 50 mm. Most often referred to as International Medalist, Type II Medalist or Match 150 in Europe. A 1976 Browning catalog describe the International Medalist with a barrel length of 5.9 inches and a grip width as 1.8 inches.

International II was first introduced by FN and Browning in 1975. It has the same frame as the regular and Type I International Medalist. It has a slab sided barrel with a moveable weight under the barrel. The grips were changed from a one piece wrap-around to a split, two piece, left and right half with a palm rest. The 1978 Browning catalog does not show the International Medalist II. However, their wholesale price list for 1978 does list the International Medalist with a foot note stating, “Meets the standard of the International Shooters' Union”.

Practice 150 is the same at the International II, except the grips do not have the palm rest. These grips have the same configuration as on the Type I except they are split into two halves. This is small difference from the International II, however, it is a variation designated by the manufacturer, FN.

All of the variations of the Medalist have the same frame, grip angle, the dry-fire mechanism and a trigger adjustable for pull and over travel. The barrel and/or the grips vary from one model to another. Barrels for all international models is 150 mm. in length. This gets converted to inches as 5.9, 5 7/8 or 5 15/16 depending on the conversion factor that is used to change mm to inches.
