From its exclusive local West Tennessee owner’s estate comes this excellent quality Savage model 440. Manufacturer was Fabarm: Fabbrica Bresciana Armi, s.p.a., of Brescia, Italy, and so marked, a prestigious company known nowadays for its high end over unders. Importer was Savage Arms of Westfield, MA. XXIV Italian date code indicates 1968 production, First Year Import of a run that lasted only 4 years, until the Japanese Brownings blew it out of the water. Type is box lock over and under shotgun. Construction is entirely steel metal, with Italian walnut stock and forend. Chambering is 12 gauge, 2 3/4 inch shells only. Barrels are 26 inchers, with .704 muzzle Modified top and .712 muzzle Improved Cylinder lower. Sight system is 11 post, .275 width serrated top Ventilated Rib that sits .25 inch above the top tube at mid section; and with stainless front and middle bead, figure 8 sights. It has solid block extractor, no hull slinging ejectors. Ignition is bottom first, non selective, with recoil transfer between first and second shot. Trigger is .245 smooth faced, pulls at 5 pounds with minimal felt creep and moderate overtravel. Safety is tang mounted single position. Length of pull is 14 1/8 inches from the trigger to the end of the Savage Factory Butt Plate. Drop is standard field 1.5 x 2.5 inch, with 1 inch right hand cant. Weight empty is 7 pounds, with center of gravity at the breech pin. Finish is bright blue with 1/3 coverage receiver engraving. Wood finish is gloss walnut, with cut checkered laterals onthe forend and pistol grip. Surface detractions are moderate to extensive, with extensive stock scouring. Forend release is replacement; recess area does not have any escutcheon. Metal finish is much better, only occasional freckling that is chiefly concentrated on the matte finished receiver. We rate this shotgun as Good, perhaps Very Good, 70 to 75 percent vicinity by our estimate. Photos ought to suffice for our distinguished shoppers to judge finish grade for themselves.
