English proofed barrel marked "PHILADELPHIA", lock marked "TRYON". Tryon was a noted Philadelphia, PA gunmaker who made both civilian guns and military contracts. 48-1/4" barrel, part octagon, part round with "wedding band" separator. Very heavy thick-walled barrel with bore diameter of about 15/16". Total weight of about 15 pounds. Metal parts are in untouched condition with rust patina and some scattered pitting, and some old black paint on the barrel. Nipple is broken off, one ramrod pipe is missing, the forearm cap is missing and there is some old bailing wire wrapped around the muzzle. Walnut stock is almost black with untouched patina, checkered in the wrist, overall in sound condition with a couple minor chips in the forearm edges, a small crack by the lock mortise and a small crack by the lock screw. These huge guns are always a popular reminder of the "market hunters" who would decimate entire flocks of waterfowl to sell in the days before game laws prohibited the practice and established limits. This gun has the look of having been put up at the end of the percussion era and never fired again in 100 years or more. Mechanically good, sold as a collector item only, not warranted safe to shoot.
