Description: The serial number of this ’73 (160989) would indicate manufacture in 1884. It appears to be a standard model with a 24” octagon barrel and crescent style butt stock. But that’s as much “standard” as there is. First, the gun is chambered in .22 Short. (Of 720,609 Models of 1873 made, only 350 were in .22 caliber - either Short or Long). Second, this is an extremely rare take-down variation. The take-down version was produced for only five months – 1884, from about serial number 150,000 to 175,000 – and of the few which were made, many were deemed unsuitable and had their mechanism pinned and peened so as to not have the take-down function available. The number of take-down versions is EXTREMELY small.

The take-down feature was accomplished by inserting a non-threaded barrel into a non-threaded receiver and securing it with a tapered cross pin which was placed through both sides of the receiver from the left side, and a hole in the bottom, breech end, of the barrel. Because of the weight of the barrel, it did not take long, with much use, for the whole mechanism to become loose and unsafe. Hence, the short life span of the ’73 take-down. Also, it was easy to lose the cross pin, and it is common for the few existent take-downs to have something other than the original taper pin holding the action together.

This rifle is in good working order and has a well-used but shootable bore with visible rifling and general shallow black powder pitting. There is little if any original finish, most of the metal having patina’d. The inner magazine tube is in good condition. I believe the butt stock has been changed or replaced, but all the other parts except the taper pin appear to be original.
